About Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server

Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server is a companion product for Bentley OpenUtilities Designer that executes and monitors job processing tasks as batch operations. Bentley OpenUtilities Designer data is relayed to and from other systems while Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server runs invisibly in the background. Jobs are processed according to job types, which are configured as a set of scheduling, priority, and failure notification preferences. Authorized users can view current job activity as well as information about logged events.

By performing routine or time-consuming tasks with little user intervention, Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server expedites production and data maintenance processes. Users can perform their design work without interruptions and delays and without competing for system resources. If a job fails for any reason, Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server can automatically disable scheduling for that job type, eliminating unnecessary demand on the system.

System Requirements

The system requirements for the Configuration Assistant are the same as those for Bentley OpenUtilities Designer, which was developed for Intel-based systems running Windows NT or Windows 2000 and utilizing an Oracle 8i database. See “System Requirements” for details.

Installing Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server

Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server runs on a single designated Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server that processes jobs from the database. In order to run Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server jobs, Bentley OpenUtilities Designer must also be installed on this designated Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server.

For information about installation and setup procedures, see “Installing Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server”.

Starting Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server

Double-clicking the Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server icon on the desktop opens the application and displays the main screen. From the main screen, system administrators and other authorized users can perform the following tasks:

  • Configure job types
  • Create or modify scheduling and monitoring rules
  • Manage job activity on a job-by-job basis

The Start Server command on the Actions menu is used to start server processing. This command is available only on the computer that has been designated to run the program (see “Installing Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server”).

The Stop Server command on the Actions menu shuts down the background processing controlled by Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server.

The Exit command on the File menu closes the main screen but does not affect server processing or the status of any jobs that may be running at the time.

Using Auto Startup and Shutdown

ED Service is a Windows Service component of Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server that can be utilized to automatically launch Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server when the computer is rebooted and then terminate program operation when the computer is shut down. Automatic startup and shutdown is a convenient feature when the designated Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server computer is due to be shut down for any reason. With automated scheduling, any jobs that are running at the time of shutdown can be allowed to complete instead of being aborted.

The Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server software includes the following set of sample batch files which can be modified to schedule startups and shutdowns:

  • EDServerScheduleStart.bat - Starts Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server at the scheduled time.
  • EDServerScheduleStopWithAbort.bat - Stops Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server and aborts jobs that are running. Note: Certain job types cannot be aborted (e.g., a GIS merge and post operation).
  • EDServerScheduleStopWithoutAbort.bat - Stops Bentley OpenUtilities Designer Server but waits for the completion of jobs that are currently running.

These batch files are located in the Bin folder.
